The Denver Broncos 2023 staff will have experience
The Denver Broncos appear to be bucking a trend of hiring youthful coaches for their new staff. The Broncos turned to Sean Payton as their head coach for the 2023 season. He just hired a 75-year-old assistant.
According to Jeff Legwold with ESPN, the Broncos signed Mike Westhoff as their assistant head coach. He will oversee special teams with special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica.

Westoff’s first NFL coaching gig was with the Indianapolis Colts in 1982. He was a member of Sean Payton’s staff with the New Orleans Saints, where he served as the special teams’ coordinator. Westoff hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2018.
Westhoff isn’t the only ancient coach the Broncos are looking to hire for their coaching staff. Rex Ryan, who hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2016, is considered the Broncos’ first choice to be their defensive coordinator in 2023. These are odd choices by Payton in his first year in Denver. He appears to want experience, even if it hasn’t been recent, over young coaching blood.
