The Delaware State Hornets have struggled to find success in their football program over the last two seasons. After finishing the season with a record of 1-11, this marks the second consecutive season with only one win for DSU. As a result of going 2-21 in his first two seasons as head coach, the Hornets decided to fire Lee Hull. It wasn’t long before the university found a replacement with a great deal of football experience: former Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson.
DeSean Jackson was one of the most dynamic and explosive players in the history of the NFL. He is the first player to earn a Pro Bowl invite for two different positions: wide receiver and kick returner. As a receiver, Jackson was a threat to opposing secondaries; he holds the record for the most 60+ yard touchdowns with 26. The same speed and explosive playmaking made him just as dangerous on special teams returning punts and kickoffs. He brings 15 years of professional football experience to Delaware State.
Delaware State’s HC
The excitement behind DSU’s new hire is infectious; the student-athletes and DeSean himself are filled with enthusiasm. Jackson has vocalized how eager he is for the opportunity to coach at a historically Black university. His only experience in coaching comes at the high school level, with an offensive coordinator job at Woodrow Wilson High. The university is confident in its decision, along with current NFL coaches and players who have offered their approval.
New Hope
Following a few disappointing seasons under Hull, Delaware State needed something fresh and interesting to turn the program around. It is clear that they have done just that with the choice of DeSean Jackson; this signing has the type of buzz that could entice recruits to play at DSU and raise expectations for the program from the moment he takes the helm. It’s certain that more eyes will be on this football team going forward. As long as Coach Jackson can win more than one game, he will have already topped the previous two years.
