Deion Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, watched on in shock and disbelief as his son, Shedeur Sanders, went undrafted in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Then, on the second day, he saw his son passed over by every single NFL team in rounds two and three. It was not until the fifth round, on the third and final day, that Shedeur was selected by the Cleveland Browns.
Indeed, Sanders’ slide in the draft is one that will be talked about a great deal this upcoming season, and perhaps longer if he turns out to be as good as his father believes he can be.
But, of course, there are many who believe that the Buffaloes star should have been drafted much earlier, including ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper.
Mel Kiper and Other Analysts Were Shocked Shedeur Sanders Fell to the Fifth Round of the 2025 NFL Draft

After Sanders did not get selected on day two of the draft, Kiper said on the broadcast, “I really have nothing to say. I think it’s disgusting. That’s all I can say.”
“It’s gotta be about more than football. He’s the best pure passer you can draft,” ESPN’s Booger McFarland said/ “When you start to see developmental projects like Jalen Milroe and Dillon Gabriel — and nothing against those guys, but they’re not nearly the player that Shedeur Sanders is. When they go before him, the only thing you can say is that it’s more than football.”
Joe Klatt added, “Tonight, for Shedeur Sanders, this is a time for some deep self-reflection. His play on the field would suggest he should already have been selected. There were some quarterbacks, their play on the field probably doesn’t warrant a selection over his play on the field.
“The reason he’s undrafted at this point is because of the person that sat with those teams and did not, for whatever reason, jell with them.”
Deion Sanders Has Thanked Mel Kiper for Believing in His Son

Earlier this week, Kiper posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Mario Cristobal claims he spoke to a million people about Cam Ward, yet the one he didn’t speak to, being me, had Ward ranked higher (6th on my Big Board) than any of the other draft experts. Interesting isn’t it. And oh by the way, I didn’t speak to Deion about Shedeur either. I need another Orange Crush after this nonsense.”
Coach Prime saw the post and responded, “But I Love u my man! You stood on the desk with great balance 10 toes down and said what u doggone said & didn’t flinch. You knew what time it was my man & we’re blessed to be right where God wanted us to be. ‘With OPPORTUNITY’ they forgot I was in the tv/entertainment business for 20 years before coaching.”
The beginning of Shedeur’s NFL career will almost surely be under a microscope this season due to who he is and his slide in the draft. Only time will tell if his father and Kiper are proven to be right.
