Texas A&M and Chicago Bears fans sent prayers to Darren Lewis’ family following news of the former running back’s death from cancer at 55. On Friday, Texas A&M announced the death on their website.
A former Chicago Bears running back was a stud in college
As previously discussed on GH, Lewis holds the Texas A&M all-time rushing record. He broke numerous records before the Bears drafted him in 1991:
His records are substantial, as he set the Aggies single season rushing record with 1,692 yards back in 1988. That record stood all the way up until 2018, when Trayveon Williams went for over 1,700 yards. Back in 1988 though, Lewis only trailed Barry Sanders in rushing and lost to Barry as well for the Heisman.
In his final game in college, Lewis won the 1990 Holiday Bowl defeating the Heisman winner at the time. In that game he ran for 104 yards and grabbed two scores, while also passing a touchdown to his own quarterback on a trick play.
After his all time career, the Chicago Bears took Lewis in the 1991 NFL Draft. Lewis only played three seasons for the team and in the league and then ended his career. Lewis had a rough time battling addiction after his career had ended and he also got himself into legal trouble because of that.

Very sad news. Darren is my all-time fav running back! Speed, strength, field vision, and cut-back ability! No one at A&M has done it better!
