College Football Fans And Former Players Mourn The Loss

Lewis was one of the greatest college football players to ever grace the field, he not only led his team in all time rush yards, but also is the all time leader for the whole Southwest Conference. He had more career yards than both Eric Dickerson and Earl Campbell, two men that are also thought of as two of the greatest backs ever.
Lewis started his career in Carter High School and would later go on to play at Texas A&M in all of his four seasons playing.
His records are substantial, as he set the Aggies single season rushing record with 1,692 yards back in 1988. That record stood all the way up until 2018, when Trayveon Williams went for over 1,700 yards. Back in 1988 though, Lewis only trailed Barry Sanders in rushing and lost to Barry as well for the Heisman.
In his final game in college, Lewis won the 1990 Holiday Bowl defeating the Heisman winner at the time. In that game he ran for 104 yards and grabbed two scores, while also passing a touchdown to his own quarterback on a trick play.
After his all time career, the Chicago Bears took Lewis in the 1991 NFL Draft. Lewis only played three seasons for the team and in the league and then ended his career. Lewis had a rough time battling addiction after his career had ended and he also got himself into legal trouble because of that.
Lewis was able to turn his life around but in a very sad turn, he was diagnosed with stage IV cancer at the beginning of this year. From all us here at Gridiron Heroics, we are sending our prayers and thoughts to the family in such a tough time, and a life taken too soon.
May Darren Lewis rest in peace, and our condolences go out to the Texas A&M program and to all who are connected to him.
