Jerry Jones reveals Cowboys had eyes on rival QB in NFL draft

The Dallas Cowboys had their eyes on a rival star quarterback in the 2020 NFL draft

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is a big fan of quarterback Jalen Hurts despite him playing for a rival. And when he was asked about the Trey Lance trade for the Cowboys, Jones made it clear that he wanted Hurts coming out of Oklahoma.

During a press conference on Saturday, Jones suggested twice that he wanted to select another quarterback in a draft. Although he didn’t name Jalen Hurts, it’s clear he was talking about him in the answers.

“If he had hung around long enough we might’ve done this on the Philadelphia quarterback about two years ago,” Jones told reporters on Saturday via Pro Football Talk.

“I just told you, two years ago we were looking at the Philadelphia quarterback, I don’t want to call any names, but we were looking at him, had he fallen to us there we would have drafted him,” Jones added.

Cowboys had a chance at Jalen Hurts

Hurts was selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Eagles at No. 53 overall. The Eagles made the decision to draft him even with Carson Wentz on the roster. They were ready to usher in a new era and felt like Hurts was the perfect player to take.

The Cowboys still had Dak Prescott and opted to take Trevon Diggs at No. 51 overall after selecting Oklahoma standout CeeDee Lamb in the first round. It would have paired Lamb and Hurts together if they opted to go that route instead of Diggs.

Dallas did pick at No. 82 overall in the draft, so Hurts falling that far likely wasn’t going to happen. But it’s still very interesting to hear the Cowboys’ plan, especially with Prescott’s contract situation that year being so unclear.
