The Dallas Cowboys, under the guidance of quarterback Dak Prescott, will look to post their third consecutive 12-win season in 2024 while putting their postseason woes behind them. Prescott remains one of the most criticized, scrutinized, and publicized signal-callers in America, a given when playing quarterback for one of the most storied franchises in the NFL. The quarterback position in Dallas is so high-profile that even the backup can become headline-worthy.
On Wednesday, head coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media. In addition to discussing the status of star pass rusher Micah Parsons, the frontman took time to discuss the progress being made by backup passer Trey Lance. McCarty spoke glowingly of the signal-caller, who has yet to throw a regular-season pass while donning the navy, silver, and white.

McCarthy spoke with the media on Wednesday, discussing injuries, the status of star defender Micah Parsons, and the fluidity of the quarterback room. The Dallas Cowboys bench boss is eager to see backup quarterback Trey Lance take the field.
“The athletic ability is top-notch. We’ve adjusted some things in his (throwing) motion. You can see the improvement and timing. … Him and I talk about the preseason quite often because that’s what we’re building towards,” said McCarthy regarding third-string quarterback Trey Lance. Dallas acquired Lance in the 2023 offseason for a 2024 fourth-round selection. He will become a free agency at season’s end, making this preseason important.

McCarthy continues, saying Lance will play a “large part” of the preseason. With starting quarterback Dak Prescott and longtime backup Cooper Rush penciled in atop the depth chart, Lance will have ample opportunity to make plays this preseason. McCarthy believes Lance will debut new throwing mechanics this fall.
Dallas Cowboys: QB Outlook

The Dallas Cowboys enter the 2024 season in the final year of Dak Prescott’s four-year, $160 million contract. Prescott has posted monster numbers during his tenure with the NFC East club, including leading the league in touchdown passes last year. However, his struggles in the postseason are well documented, with the Mississippi State product owning a 2-5 record in the playoffs.
A strong preseason from third-string quarterback Trey Lance could push the Cowboys to make a change at QB in 2025. Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, is just 24 years old. He played collegiately at North Dakota State, where he threw 30 touchdowns against one interception in 19 games.
