A former NFL quarterback and college quarterbacks coach is concerned about the potential of Drake Maye following spring reports of New England Patriots OTAs. Maye had up-and-down performances during practices this spring.
Any quarterback entering the league is expected to experience rookie growing pains. As previously discussed on GH, Maye showed some positive development this spring. However, he’s also having difficulty reading defenses and throwing interceptions.
Jacoby Brissett is expected to be the Week 1 starter

Per Chad Graff with The Athletic, Jacoby Brissett is expected to be the Patriots Week 1 starter:
This offseason, Brissett took all of the snaps with the first-team offense. Van Pelt called him the team’s starting quarterback.
That undoubtedly will continue into the start of training camp. And as long as Maye doesn’t dramatically outperform him, Brissett will probably be the Week 1 starter.
Did the New England Patriots overdraft Drake Maye?

Many NFL analysts thought before the draft that Maye would benefit from sitting during the 2024 season. Former NFL quarterback and South Florida quarterbacks coach Shaun King told Tyler Dunne with Go Long that Maye wasn’t worthy of being a first-round pick because he needs to sit behind Brissett. He thinks the Patriots should have traded back from the No. 3 pick:
I think the draft is where teams mess up. I’m telling you now, Drake Maye is not a first-round draft… He’s not. He’s a developmental quarterback. He comes from a great family. I given time to mature and grow into being a more confident, consistent player, he can be OK. But what did you bypass to take a developmental quarterback at three?
He’s not going to beat out Jacoby Brissett. And the way I look at draft value, if I’m drafting something in the top five — no offense to Jacoby Brissett — that can’t beat out Jacoby Brissett, then I’m overdrafting that player.
2024 won’t make or break Maye

Caleb Williams wasn’t going to lead the Patriots team to the Super Bowl this season, though he likely would have beaten out Brissett for the Week 1 starting job. Judging the selection of Maye by Week 1 feels a little premature. No one will care about the No. 3 pick sitting in 2024 if Maye is a successful long-term starter for the Patriots starting next season.
The Patriots invested in Maye, and now they must do all they can to help him develop. Sitting for a year might be in everyone’s best interest.
But if he never develops…that’s another story.

Shaun who?
Well, what would you have them do? The best Offensive Lineman would have been nice. I thought they should of kept Mac Jones. In my opinion he could of been fixed. Especially with our first and second picks going for Offensive Lineman. Then two receivers. We will always wonder what could of been. But Meyo thought other wise. In Meyo we trust. We’ve heard that before. We will see. Can’t be all that bad. Not with all the hipe surrounding him. No one knew who Patrick Mahomes was before he took the stage. We’ll get back to you in 2025.
Shaun who wannabe Q.B. coach. Trying to make a name for himself. Looser
The plan from the beginning was to have Brissett start and Maye see and learn how it’s done at the NFL level. At 21 Drake is very young with only a couple years of college competition and JB jas agreed to be his mentor so this bologna about Maye not being worthy of a top 5 pick because he is unable to beat out Jacoby (especially when training camp hasn’t even started) is nothing more then click bait. When he is ready he will be put out there and not before, Many a great quarterback held a clipboard for a year or two before they got the chance and when they did they were better for having done it.
Totally agree. Sigler is a Hack!
Well said my friend!
Anyone who says Maye isn’t a first round pick doesn’t know football. Aaron Rodgers sat for how many years in Green Bay? Maye is a developmental QB. He’s young and needs to learn. I don’t care if he doesn’t play at all this year. The Patriots have a tough schedule and should not make the playoffs. Unlike Belichick, this coaching staff doesn’t want to waste a talented QB.
Agreed
Spot on Sully!
I knew he was over-rated. He’s another Josh Rosen.
Shaun King never did anything remarkable in his career and has no idea.
You have NO IDEA WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT
Yeah yeah yeah, I call bull. Not even a preseason game in. How many so called busts turned out ok to rather good? Remember when Brady was considered a scrub with virtually no nfl future and a reach in the 6th round? Tannerhill and Baker were busts and then a change of scenery and some stability later both made playoffs with their new teams. Not to mention the other positions on the field
Maye is Mitch Trubisky II. Check and compare both player stats.
Who comes up with this fake nonsense. It’s widely reported in Boston’s local media that Drake Maye is pushing Brissette into a major QB competition and threatening to win QB1 outright.
