The Dallas Cowboys have handed over the reins of the backfield to Tony Pollard. After releasing Ezekiel Elliott in the offseason, the team tagged Pollard as he was recovering from a broken leg. The question remained whether they would get a long-term deal done. According to a recent report, it seems unlikely that this will happen.
Dallas Cowboys And Tony Pollard Unlikely To Reach Deal
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the team is likely to let Pollard play on the $10.1 million franchise tag. It is worth noting that he has already signed it meaning that a holdout is still possible but unlikely. In contrast to so many of the other running backs like Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley, Pollard doesn’t seem to mind playing on the tag. The hope is that he proves he can be a bell-cow back and get a lucrative contract next season. For the Cowboys, it makes sense why they are not eager to sign a running back.
Don’t Make The Same Mistake Twice
The team just got out from under the Elliott contract. They extended the star running back and it greatly hindered the team building. The Cowboys are not going to throw themselves into another running back commitment. Pollard is also coming off of a broken leg. Dallas most likely wants to see if Pollard is hindered at all coming back from the injury before committing to him long-term. Ultimately, it doesn’t seem like either side is upset and that is all that matters in a situation like this.
The Dallas Cowboys are hoping that Tony Pollard can be a big part of the offense. There is immense pressure on this team to make a deep playoff run. Dak Prescott and the rest of the offense need to show they can win when it matters most.
