The Detroit Lions spoiled Jerry Jones’ 82nd birthday.
Sunday in Arlington, The Lions lambasted the Dallas Cowboys, 47-9, in a game that head coach Mike McCarthy pulled Dallas’ starters with roughly 10 minutes remaining in the game before the bye week gets underway.
The loss was the Cowboys’ worst home defeat since Jones purchased the team in 1989, and the Hall of Fame owner vented his frustrations after the game.
“This was very concerning and it was very humbling,” Jones told reporters following Sunday’s loss. “This was a shocker.”
Will Jerry Jones Make Major Changes for Dallas Cowboys?
“The thing that was impressive, I saw a very physical bunch that was having a lot of fun at our expense,” Jones said. “We won’t forget it – not against Detroit. We saw how we would like to be.”
Given that the Cowboys were embarrassed on their home field with the bye week looming, it is easy to wonder whether Jones is tempted to make a head coaching change, pulling the plug on Mike McCarthy, as he is in the midst of the final year of his contract with the Cowboys sliding down the NFC East standings.
“I haven’t even considered that,” Jones said Sunday. “I’m not considering that. Just so you’re clear. Don’t, I wouldn’t be a hypothetical on that matter. Do you think I’m an idiot, do ya?
“I’m not going to hypothetical with you about when I’d consider a coaching change, in light of the timing we’re sitting here with. I’m not. At all.”
As the Cowboys’ season continues to fall short of expectations, it’s easy to see why Jones’ disappointment and anger is starting to boil over. It remains to be seen if any major changes could be coming for Dallas.
