The Detroit Lions demolished the Dallas Cowboys in a 47-9 beatdown on a day when Jerry Jones envisioned a celebration. Jared Goff and an explosive offense spoiled Jones’ 82nd birthday Thursday in front of a dismayed home crowd at AT&T Stadium.
From the get-go it was obvious the Lions came prepared to blow people away. The Lions’ ground game nearly racked up 200 rushing yards behind an efficient Goff, who sliced through the Cowboys‘ defense, throwing for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns. It’s just that they gave no answers on either side of the ball.
Jerry Jones’ Birthday Bash Turns Into a Nightmare Against Lions
It was the Cowboys’ worst loss since 1989 when Jerry Jones bought the team. Another notable loss was from last year’s playoff run against a young wild-card Green Bay Packers. Prescott was horrible all game, going just 17-of-33 with 178 yards passing, and two interceptions. Dallas had no momentum and four sacks by the Lions’ front seven under constant pressure forced the Cowboys out of rhythm as well. But the Cowboys’ defense couldn’t keep Detroit’s balanced offense off the field and it was a long day for the home team.
The fans didn’t miss Detroit’s dominant performance with their calling at the end of the game: “Let’s Go Lions!” The stadium echoed with chants, adding more salt for a painful day on what should’ve been a joyous day for the Cowboys’ owner.
For Jerry Jones, this may be his toughest loss yet, especially in the timing. His own house was no place for the celebration he had in mind — watching his team’s disastrous performance on his birthday.
As Dallas heads into the bye week, there’s a lot of soul-searching to be done. With the Cowboys now sitting at .500, their season teeters on the edge. Meanwhile, the Lions continue to surge, looking every bit like a top contender in the NFC.
Now, it’s time for Jerry Jones to do some soul-searching in Dallas before the bye week. The Cowboys now sit at .500, on the brink of elimination. Are the Cowboys going to be searching for a new coach or a possible trade? At the same time, the Lions are on a roll. In a tight NFC North, Detroit appears to be every bit the contender in the NFC they so desperately have longed to be.
