If the 2024 NFL season proved anything about the Dallas Cowboys roster-building strategy, it is that they do not place high value on the running back position. First, they let Tony Pollard, who had had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in his final two seasons with the Cowboys, walk in free agency. Then, they decided not to pursue Derrick Henry, who ended up signing an incredibly team-friendly two-year $16 million contract (with only $9 million guaranteed) with the Baltimore Ravens.
Instead, the Cowboys brought in Ezekiel Elliot for a reunion, a move that proved to be disastrous for the team. Now, with a new head coach, Dallas is hoping that their offense will be much better, especially with the emergence of Rico Dowdle later in the season.
However, one NFL analyst believes the team can do much better at the running back position.
The Dallas Cowboys Are Urged to Trade for Chicago Bears Running Back D’Andre Swift

Interestingly, both Dowdle and Pollard had the exact same number of rushing yards, 1,079, last season. However, the Cowboys also let him leave in free agency this offseason, leaving Javonte Williams as the top running back on their depth chart.
Since the Cowboys do not have any veterans who have proven they can sustainably carry the starting running back load, Pro Football Network suggested them as a possible trade destination for Chicago Bears running back D’Andre Swift:
“Swift still has two years left on the three-year, $24 million deal he signed last offseason. That makes the timing of this important, as the Bears would want to wait until after June 1 to trade Swift. By doing so, they’d save $8 million in cap room and take on a minuscule $1.3 million dead cap hit the next two years. It would also give the Bears the luxury of seeing if they come away with one of their preferred running backs in the draft.
“One coaching connection for Swift is in Washington, where Brian Johnson is an assistant. Johnson was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator in 2023 when Swift made the Pro Bowl and had his only 1,000-yard rushing season. The Steelers and Cowboys are also teams that could use more running back depth and lean on more zone runs, which has been a better scheme fit for Swift in his career.”
Last season, Swift had 959 rushing yards while averaging 3.8 yards per carry (the worst of his career) behind a woeful Bears offensive line.
While it is unlikely that Jerry Jones will want Swift due to his “high” salary, adding him to Dallas’ offense is a real intriguing idea.
