The Dallas Cowboys may be one of the teams under the most pressure to win big in 2024. For three consecutive seasons Dallas has won 12 games during the regular season but failed to make it past the divisional round of the playoffs.
Mike McCarthy could be on the hot seat with one more early exit from the post-season. While Dallas is looking for as many options as possible to keep their offense competitive, there may be one weapon who won’t be on the roster week one.
The Dallas Cowboys Expected To Sever Ties With Offensive Weapon
28-year-old running back Royce Freeman has six years’ experience. Many could see Freeman taking over the No. 2 role in the backfield as he understads the system. However, it’s also possible that he won’t make the 53-man roster. Cowboys Wire, a USA Today site, sees Freeman getting beat out completely.
In putting together a training camp prediction of the Cowboys’ final 53-man roster, Cowboys wire foresees four backs being kept. Elliott and Dowdle are the obvious ones, with fullback Hunter Luepke in the group, too. The fourth back, though, is Vaughn, the popular 2023 preseason star who could get added consideration because of his talent as a kick returner.
Still, though it is clear that the Cowboys are not valuing running backs highly this season, it would be a surprise for the Cowboys to axe Freeman, who was signed in April.
The running back position will be one of the most intriguing parts of the 2024 Cowboys roster. Establishing the bell cow will need to happen sooner rather than later to help the offense’s identity.
