Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has been a major focal point this offseason but now he’s in the news for far more serious reasons.
Since the Cowboys lost yet another playoff game where they were favored after their third-straight 12 win season, there’s been a ton of speculation about Prescott’s future in Dallas.
There were some people around the NFL who truly believed Jerry Jones may have cut ties with Prescott after another bad playoff performance, but the Dallas Cowboys owner decided to keep both head coach Mike McCarthy and said he was sticking with Prescott as the franchise QB.
Dak Prescott finished the regular season as a strong MVP candidate after wrapping up one of the best campaigns of his NFL career. The Dallas Cowboys QB led the NFL in several key categories with 4,516 passing yards (third), 36 touchdowns (1st), nine interceptions and a QBR of 72.7 (second in the NFL).
Now Jerry Jones and the Cowboys brass find themselves in an all-too familiar position. With Prescott nearing the end of his last major contract extension, Dallas has to either sign him to a new long-term deal to help free cap space for 2024, or release him after June 1 which would save almost $30 million on next year’s cap number but the team would lose a massive chunk of change in dead money owed to the one-time hopeful franchise QB.
In a way, the Dallas Cowboys have painted themselves into a corner when it comes to Dak Prescott.. He has a no-trade clause in his deal, so he can’t necessarily be dealt. They owe him $59 million in 2024, which gives him a lot of leverage in negotiations—at worst, he can walk away from the table and the Cowboys will have to pay him that money. Again, a cut is a longshot here.
This led almost every NFL Insider and Cowboys beat reporter to assume Jones would give Prescott a contract extension] so he’d have flexibility to make moves this offseason to help get his team over the hump and make a run toward the Super Bowl in 2024.
But free agency is underway, the Cowboys have only added one player in free agency and have watched several key starters leave to take contracts with other teams. It will be fascinating if the Cowboys decide to extend Prescott or make him play on the final year of his contract and accept the salary cap hit and inability to add significant talent.
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Involved In Two Separate Police Investigations According To Report
Dallas police are investigating claims of an alleged sexual assault involving Prescott and a woman from 2017.
“Dallas Police Department received a report of a sexual assault the complainant said occurred on February 2, 2017, in the 8500 block of Stemmons Freeway,” a Dallas police spokesperson said Wednesday night. “This is an ongoing investigation.”
The incident occurred in the parking lot of Dallas strip club XTC Cabaret. Dallas police received the report Tuesday.
In a separate case involved with the same investigation, the Dallas Cowboys QB is taking action of his own.
Dak Prescott, who denied the allegations, lives in Prosper.
An attorney representing Prescott met with Prosper police last week and “explained to PPD officials that his client was possibly a victim of theft by coercion,” a town of Prosper spokesperson told The News. The department declined to release any additional details, citing the “matter being in the preliminary stages and considered and active investigation.
It was unclear whether Plano police have opened an investigation into the alleged assault.
The woman’s attorney, Yoel Zehaie, said during a Tuesday interview on KRLD-FM (105.3 The Fan) that Prescott “raped” his client and a civil lawsuit is “very imminent.” Zahaie also said his client hasn’t ruled out the possibility of filing criminal charges. The Dallas Morning Newsdoes not typically name victims of sexual assault.
Officials with the NFL and Dallas Cowboys both declined to comment on the matter earlier this week.
