Colts’ training camp is underway, and all eyes are on the quarterback position. Indianapolis began training camp Wednesday, July 26 at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Indiana.
As always the quarterback position is the focus for the Colts. When the season kicks off the Colts will start its sixth quarterback in six seasons. Other starting quarterbacks include Jacoby Brissett, Phillip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan.
Rookie Anthony Richardson and veteran Gardner Minshew enter training camp as the top quarterbacks. Minshew worked with the first team offense Wednesday while Richardson worked with the second team. The question is who will start in 2023?
Arguments for Richardson and Minshew
Let’s start with Minshew. Minshew is a decent quarterback who knows Colts Head Coach Shane Steichen’s system. Minshew played well with the Jaguars and Eagles. Minshew has recorded 6,632 passing yards, 44 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Minshew’s experience and leadership will help him if the Colts choose to start him. Acquiring Minshew during the offseason should help the Colts during the season.
Richardson is the young and electric rookie everyone wants to see. The knock-on Richardson is that he only started 13 games in college. Indianapolis picked Richardson in the first round despite the lack of collegiate experience. Richardson recorded 3,105 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 15 interceptions at Florida.
Richardson is a raw prospect that has a lot of work to do. Richardson’s size and athletic ability gives the Colts a dynamic quarterback. Richardson’s ability can threaten defenses and provide a spark for Indy’s offense.
Training Camp Will Tell
Steichen and the Colts’ offensive staff will decide who starts after training camp. Training camp will show who is ready to suit up. Minshew and Richardson will compete to see who the better man for the job is. Both quarterbacks have time to improve and must show consistency. Colts’ training camp will be exciting because of the quarterback situation.
