‘Daddy Ball’: Colorado Football Elite Duo Criticized Following Jersey Retirement Announcement

Colorado football won nine games last season, their most since 2016. An encore to a 4-8 campaign, Colorado finished 23rd in the final College Football Playoff Top 25 Poll, housed Heisman Trophy Award winner Travis Hunter, and earned a record-setting season from quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

A program that largely struggled over the past two decades, Colorado gained national attention under the tutelage of head coach Deion Sanders and the exceptional play from his football-throwing son and the two-way star that is Hunter. Although the elder Sanders will remain at the helm in 2025, Shedeur and Hunter will head to the professional ranks. On Monday, Colorado announced they would hold a jersey retirement for Sanders and Hunter, much to the mixed reactions of college football fans.

Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter will enter Colorado football immortality on Saturday during the team’s Black and Gold Day. The duo will become the program’s fifth and sixth players to earn the recognition, with the late Rashaan Salaam earning the honor last. Bryon White, Joe Romig, and Bobby Anderson also have retired jerseys.

Shedeur Sanders played two seasons with Colorado, throwing for 64 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. His career 72% completion percentage is the best in Division I history. Meanwhile, Hunter, who transferred to CU with Sanders in 2023, is a two-time All-American who won the program’s second Heisman Trophy Award in 2024. He caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns while recording 36 tackles, 11 passes defended, and four interceptions.

However, many college football fans questioned their inclusion in the program’s ring of honor. Colorado did not win a bowl game during their tenure, with just one win over a ranked team, a TCU Horned Frogs club that entered the 2023 season ranked but finished the year 5-7. A legion of fans took to social media, blasting the program for their decision:

13-11 Qb Record gets your jersey retired! 😂😂😂😂

This is a level of daddy ball that I didn’t believe was achievable. Honestly hats off to Deion. This is impressively shameful

    — Dick Crum (@dickcrumbles) April 15, 2025

Lol, you have not retired either Kordell Stewart or Michael Westbrook’s numbers, but you are retiring these guys’ numbers? That should infuriate your fanbase.

    — Danny Dip Buyer (@DannyDipBuyer) April 15, 2025

🤣😂🤣😂 what on earth did Shedeur do to get his # retired???

    — 🫡 (@DaSmith127) April 15, 2025

Yall remember when ya wanted to go to the movies but your dad made you bring your little brother…? Yeah lol.

    — Jack 🌹 (@madjax114) April 15, 2025

They were 13-12 and never even won a bowl game. Program is a joke. 😂

    — Joe (@UFLORIDAJOE) April 14, 2025

    For losing the Alamo bowl?

    — Go Cougs (@gocougs123) April 14, 2025

Wow 13-12 W/L record ONE bowl appearance and they lost 🤣🤣🤣 LEGENDS
