With every fan the Colorado football team gains, it seems they accumulate double the number of critics. A year after a poor 1-11 showing, the Colorado Buffaloes parted ways with head coach Karl Dorrell and inked former NFL megastar turned Jackson State frontman Deion Sanders to lead the program. The polarizing Sanders took the DI ranks by storm, bringing unprecedented transfers to Boulder, including his two sons and star two-way player Travis Hunter.
The often outspoken Sanders led Colorado to a 4-8 record, a result met with mixed reviews. This offseason, Sanders and company used the transfer portal heavily again in an attempt at roster reconstruction. Conversely, Sanders has kept Colorado in the news by routinely making headlines through interviews and social media posts. However, on Wednesday, another Colorado coach found himself in the crosshairs of a presumed critic.

With the spring window of the transfer portal officially closed and signing day well in the rearview mirror, recruiting news has fallen to the wayside as teams approach the 2024 season. Nevertheless, Colorado is again the topic of discussion, with Colorado State-Pueblo head coach Philip Vigil taking aim at the program for alleged tampering with a high school commit. Vigil called out Colorado football assistant director of player personnel Devin Rispress for texting a current player in an attempt to flip his recruitment. Rispress responded to the allegations, calling out Vigil and the DII program, but the impact of these allegations on the program is a cause for concern.

Division II head coach Philip Vigil went viral on Wednesday, sharing screenshots of Colorado football assistant director of player personnel Devin Rispress allegedly trying to flip the recruitment of a high school commit. Vigil tagged Rispress, the NCAA, the Big 12, and the official Colorado Buffaloes football channel, claiming tampering and asking the governing body about the legality of the actions within the screenshots.
Hey @NCAA and @Big12Conference, is this considered tampering, or is @Coach2Bless and @CUBuffsFootball able to recruit our current players like this? 🤔🤷♂️#ToTheTop pic.twitter.com/PV7dN1yko1

Rispress responded to Vigil, saying, “Nice try y’all been catfished, wrong guy, brother. You could’ve hit me up before tweeting this and embarrassing your program.” Rispress quickly shut down the allegations, claiming the recruit in question was contacted by somebody who misrepresented Colorado. Most took the side of Rispress, while others believed the Colorado football coach was lying in an attempt to cover his tracks. Regardless, Rispress, coach Deion Sanders and the Buffs find themselves back in the spotlight amid potential tampering allegations.
Colorado Buffaloes: Eyeing Much Improved 2024 Season

The Colorado football program enjoyed a nice three-win increase last year, including a road win over the then-ranked TCU Horned Frogs. However, the expectation is that the Buffaloes will again improve their win total in 2024. They will return star quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of head coach Deion Sanders, next season. The younger Sanders threw for 27 touchdowns against three picks last year but played behind one of the most susceptible offensive lines in the country.
Colorado will also house one of the best players in the country, two-way star Travis Hunter. The Jackson State transfer and former top prospect tallied 57 receptions for 721 yards and five scores in 2023. He also recorded 30 tackles, two TFLs, and three interceptions on defense.
