The Colorado Buffaloes are rebranding themselves in 2023. Head Coach Deion Sanders has brought a new mentality to Colorado football.
Eighteen football players have left Colorado football since the 2023 spring game according to the NCAA transfer portal. A total of 41 players have left since Sanders arrived according to Max Olson of the Athletic.
Colorado only has 20 players remaining on its roster. The transfer portal closes on April 30.
Players leaving Colorado can be considered a mass exodus. Colorado has lost some talented players. Most notable Montana Lemonius-Craig and Jordyn Tyson. Lemonius-Craig and Tyson were Colorado’s top receivers in 2022.
Why Are So Many Players Leaving?
Sanders wants to change Colorado and it starts with getting the players he wants. Sanders said, “We’ve got a few positions already taken care of because I’m bringing my luggage with me. It ain’t going to be no more of this mess that these wonderful fans, this student body, and some of your parents have put up with for probably two decades now. I’m coming. And when I get here, there’s going to be change.”
Sanders also said “I want y’all to get ready to go ahead and jump in that portal. Do whatever you’re going to get. Because the more of you who jump in, the more room you make. Because we’re bringing kids that are smart, tough, fast, disciplined, with character.”
Sanders brought quarterback Shedeur Sanders with him from Jackson State. Sanders also got dual-sport athlete Travis Hunter to Boulder.
Colorado went 1-11 in 2022. Colorado hasn’t had a winning season since 2016 when they finished 10-4.
