The stage is set for an epic finish to the college football season. With the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff, the regular season’s final weeks have added importance to teams with postseason aspirations. However, that doesn’t mean standout conference games don’t draw the attention of fans regardless of record. On Saturday, as the USC Trojans continue to usher in their first season competing in the Big Ten, they hosted new conference foe Nebraska in a battle of two bowl-eligible hopefuls.
In a game with three lead changes, the USC Trojans held a 28-20 lead late in the fourth quarter. With the Nebraska Cornhuskers amid a potential game-tying drive in the final moments, a false start penalty backed up the Matt Rhule-led club for a 1st-and-15 at the 19-yard line for the game’s final play. On the final snap, Nebraska quarterback Dyland Raiola tossed the game-sealing interception. However, football fans erupt after the play, with an apparent hold keeping wideout Jahmal Banks from making a play.
College Football Fans Bash Refs For Brutal Miss Call On Final Play
According to Fox College Football on Twitter:
There was a lot of contact on that final play for Nebraska.
On the game’s last play and trailing 28-21, Nebraska Cornhuskers star freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola lobbed a short Hail Mary pass to the endzone for wide receiver Jahmal Banks. While attempting to catch the ball at its highest point, Banks was held by DeCarlos Nicholson, with Greddy Vance Jr. coming over to make the game-sealing interception.
Banks would have needed to make a contested catch in double coverage without the holding to force the game to tie a two-point conversion. However, college football fans are not too pleased with the referees missing a prominent call that undoubtedly cost the Cornhuskers any chance to extend the contest. Many football devotees took to Twitter, with the officiating crew in their crosshairs:
Fine the officials or have every play reviewed as quickly as possible remotely? Something has to change

That was 5 seconds of holding the receiver

That DPI has to be called. That's a game changing play that the referees have to call. Huge miss there.

Every game since we've been in this conference. We've never had a game where the majority of the calls went our way

Ridiculous no call

Refs rarely will call that on home team, sucks and yes should have been called
— RUN THE DAMN BALL (@RTDBNebraska) November 17, 2024
Husker fans are sick of this. Even a girl, who never played football, can see these obvious interference calls, at least 2 blatant ones that would/could have resulted in a 1st down or score.

What if I told you this same thing cost us 2TDs?
— Rhuler of Husker Nation (@RHULEROFNEB) November 17, 2024
Yes it was , unless youre a blind ref
— Unrealized Prophet (@balkanbull23) November 17, 2024
huge PI ignored… refs gotta call that.
