College football continues to usher in a new era of player empowerment funneled through NIL. However, despite an overflooded transfer portal every year, college football’s rivalry week remains as fierce and as competitive as ever. This season, rivalry week was full of upsets and nail-biting back-and-forths, headlined by the Michigan Wolverines’ unreal 13-10 victory on the road against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Following the conclusion of “The Game,” Michigan players planted their flag at midfield, with fights erupting and law enforcement forced to intervene.
NC State versus North Carolina and a clash between Florida and Florida State also resulted in a flag-planting postgame incident, with now one Ohio lawmaker trying to make the action a felony. On Wednesday, reports went viral of Ohio Rep. Josh Williams introducing the O.H.I.O. Sportsmanship Act, which would make it illegal to plant a flag at midfield when visiting Ohio Stadium in Columbus. Nevertheless, college football fans clowed Williams for his proposed bill.
College Football Fans Take Aim at Ohio Senator
According to On3 through Twitter:
NEW: Ohio state Rep. Josh Williams introduced the O.H.I.O. Sportsmanship Act Tuesday… The act would make it a felony offense to plant a flag in the center of Ohio Stadium.
On Tuesday, Ohio representative Josh Williams introduced the O.H.I.O. Sportsman Act, aiming to make it a felony to plant an opposing flag at midfield when playing on the road against the Ohio State Buckeyes. This season, players from mega-rival Michigan planted a team flag at midfield, sparking a massive brawl between the two teams. The altercation ended with police intervening to separate the two Big Ten foes.
However, despite the postgame altercation, many college football fans did not appreciate the move presented by the Ohio lawmaker. Many of those same college football fans took to social media, putting Williams in their crosshairs in what they called “making the game soft,” among other things:
It should be a felony to lose to Michigan four times in a row – especially with a $20 million roster 🤦♂️🤦♂️

The weakest thing I’ve ever seen. Michigan broke Ohio state 😂😂😂😂

This seems like a good use of government. Not wasteful in the least. The more rules and regulations the better.

No joke this might be the worst “act” ever

There's a billion different things y'all could legislate and y'all chose this

You got offended, so try to make it illegal? How did everyone become so soft? It’s a RIVALRY, it’s part of the game!

Wow, government spending time to enact a bill that hands out felonys for flag planting; just wow! Seems a bit overreaching and a waste of taxpayers money!

Josh, wtf are you doing? A felony? Ohio citizens are concerned about gun violence, violence and property crime.
Do better Josh. pic.twitter.com/4n7ThQPHZI— Dr. Theo 🇺🇸 (@Tedlinknews) December 11, 2024

Just win as a 23 point favorite next time.
