Embracing the winds of change, the college football landscape continues to evolve, for better or for worse. The college game, as it resumes its transition to an era of player compensation through name, image, and likeness (NIL), has some fans believing the sport now more than ever closely resembles the pro model. The NCAA’s new NIL and transfer rules gave college football a feel of free agency and contracts, but now, the on-field product will become even more like the NFL. According to On3 Sports, the NCAA has approved helmet communication and a two-minute warning for the 2024 season.
The NCAA also stopped clock stoppage on first downs starting last season. Under the previous rules, the game clock stopped during a college football contest when a player gained a first down, stepped out of bounds, or had an incomplete pass. The NCAA did away with the clock stoppage on first downs last year, unless under the final two minutes of each half. College fans took exception to the rule change, believing the amateur-level sport was becoming too much like the professional ranks. Additionally, added TV timeouts and less football action rubbed collegiate football fans the wrong way.
College Football Fans: React to New Two-Minute Warning Rule
Naturally, college football fans were vocal about the two-minute warning rule change that came down on Friday morning. Many college football fanatics are against the modified rule and believe the sport continues to stray away from what made it unique and less like the NFL.
Helmet communication ✅
2 minute warning more commercials 🚫— Robert McVol (@vol_equalizer) April 19, 2024
Sad how much they’ve ruined college football in a few short years

Just another commercial break opportunity

Helmet communication is great, but literally no one was asking for a 2 minute warning
— BigBarrelGeorge (@PapawWashington) April 19, 2024
All about commercial cash

w/ the addition of the two minute warning (along w/ the last 3 years of overhaul), we’ve pretty much lost all of what made the on-field product of college football unique. it was already here, but the nail is officially in the coffin now.

Thank god they are adding a two minute warning for college football. I was hoping there was a way to make games even longer and cram in even more commercials!
— Brocktoon (@_Brocktoon_) April 19, 2024
I really don’t feel the need for a 2-minute warning in college football. What’s the point? Already plenty of clock stoppages with first downs, why add another timeout?

College Football: Makes Changes for 2024 Season
According to initial reports, the two-minute warning rule change will not come with an additional TV timeout. As for helmet communication, the NCAA has nearly copied the NFL rules. Helmet communication will be limited to one on-field player per team, with the helmet marked by a green dot. Communication will cut off once the play clock hits 15 seconds or when the ball is snapped, whichever happens first.
Teams are now offered up to 18 active tablets on the sidelines. However, the tablets are limited and cannot display analytics or data. The NCAA also took a page out of the NFL playbook by expanding its postseason field come 2025. The College Football Playoff, originally a four-team field, will now consist of 12 teams, with a 14-team format coming in 2026. Automatic byes will come into play once the NCAA moves to the 14-team format.
