College football fans had USC quarterback Caleb Williams’ name trending on social media following USC’s fifth loss of the season on Saturday. The Trojans lost to the UCLA Bruins in a season they were supposed to compete for the playoffs.
USC won’t even make it to the Pac-12 Championship Game. But how much of that is Williams’ fault?
Williams’ stats won’t come close to what he finished with during last year’s Heisman season. However, Williams likely won’t play in USC’s bowl game or the conference championship game like last season. He’s still thrown for over 3,600 yards, 30 touchdowns, and only five interceptions this season.
Williams entered the season as the unanimous number-one overall prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft. North Carolina’s Drake Maye was the expected number-two quarterback in the class. Williams has fewer interceptions and more touchdowns than Maye this season.
Williams has still outplayed every other college quarterback this season, and it’s not really close. The lone exception was his performance against Notre Dame, where he looked awful.
College football fans react to Williams’ season
Many fans think he’s played his way out of the number one overall pick. Here are the best takes on X of fans making Williams trend after USC’s loss to UCLA.

Is there a more overrated QB than Caleb Williams … Dude wants stock on the team that drafts him … GTFO

Yeah, just like Ian is implying, Caleb Williams definitely can’t handle this. He should fall to the late teens or 20s in this draft, maybe right to the Steelers https://t.co/xoPspNH5Dn

Caleb Williams is going to fall in the draft. I'm telling you.

Caleb Williams should’ve talked after the loss and Riley should work with him on those things, but if you think that’s the red flag that will impact his draft status you’re not watching him play. Oregon & Washington QBs are quite a better, and they’ve been better coached.
