Colin Cowherd of FS1 has been talking about the college football playoffs on his show The Herd for quite some time. One of the biggest topics on sports shows over the last couple of days has been did the Alabama Crimson Tide deserve to make the college football playoffs over the SMU Mustangs?

Alabama finished with a 9-3 record during the regular season and did not make the SEC Championship Game. As for SMU, they lost to the Clemson Tigers 34-31 by a field goal in the ACC Championship Game. The Mustangs finished with an 11-2 record during the season.
Colin Cowherd Makes Snarky Comment About the SMU Mustangs Making the College Football Playoffs Over the Alabama Crimson Tide

On Monday, Cowherd responded to the college football playoff bracket on his show. He commented on SMU making the playoffs over Alabama. Colin Cowherd said:
“They need to soften their schedule? What’s weaker than Mercer?”
Alabama usually plays Mercer or other FCS opponents yearly. The downfall of the Crimson Tide this season was not the weak out-of-conference schedule. Their downfall was losing to either the Vanderbilt Commodores or the Oklahoma Sooners in SEC Conference play. That’s why Alabama missed the playoffs.
SMU losing to Clemson also knocked Alabama out of the playoffs. The Mustangs can’t be punished for making the ACC Championship Game and losing. It would have set a bad precedent for college football.

What’s weaker than Mercer? How about Houston Christian, who SMU played as their FCS non-con opponent

Not typically aligned with Herd, but he is absolutely on point here.

Alabama should definitely keep stellar teams like WKU, South Florida, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Mercer, Oklahoma, etc., on their schedule.

What about South Carolina who beat the acc champs and moved down? Why would they play Clemson anymore?

SMU being ranked too high to begin with without playing ANYONE is the problem. They should have had to earn their top ten spot by playing a ranked team. Same for Indiana

One of the things with the expanded college football playoffs moving forward is that the big conferences do not have divisions anymore. Some teams will benefit from weaker schedules and some teams will have tougher schedules. The Alabama Crimson Tide next time should just win the games they are supposed to. The SMU Mustangs did enough during the regular season to earn a spot in the college football playoffs over Alabama.
