The Cleveland Browns enjoyed a solid season despite missing Nick Chubb for much of the season. Thanks to an elite defense and exceptional game-planning from Kevin Stefanski, the Browns were able to punch their way into a loss in the Wild Card against the Houston Texans.
However, the most ardent Cleveland Browns fans knew that things would have been different with Chubb posing a huge threat to opposing run defenses. They want Chubb signed to a long-term deal, and that’s also what’s in the mind of Cleveland’s front office.
Cleveland Browns eager to keep Nick Chubb with team-friendly deal
The Cleveland Browns are looking to get out of the final year of Nick Chubb’s contract. However, they are reportedly looking to craft a new deal that would allow the Browns to build a better roster.
Heavy’s J.R. DeGroote writes about the logic behind the approach that was explained by Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti:
“The Browns absolutely want a healthy Nick Chubb leading their offense again, but that might be easier said than done at this point,” Ginnitti wrote on February 19. “The reality here is that an organization with -$20 million of cap space right now, probably needs to get out of this Chubb deal, freeing up $11.8 million of cap in doing so. A reunion on a much more team-friendly contract can certainly be hammered out in succession.”
A quick peek into Chubb’s performances ever since he was drafted with the 35th pick of the 2018 Draft. Aside from the past season, his rookie campaign was the only time he rushed for less than 1000 yards. He’s always had at least eight rushing TDs, with 2020 and 2022 seeing him finish with 12.
Another probable reason for the contract restructuring is Nick’s long-term health. Going through such a brutal injury could have a big dent on his explosive running game. If Chubb will still have to deal with the repercussions of his injury, not tweaking his contract would be a terrible move on Cleveland’s part.
Kevin Stefanski will be the first to tell you that while he can whip up some solid plays to make up for Chubb’s absence, having an elite half-back that can power through the most elite run defenses is a weapon he cannot live without.
Cleveland Browns fans can only hope that Nick Chubb would agree to fresh terms and accept less money to create a contender that could finally win it all.
