The Cleveland Browns franchise quarterback battled injuries throughout the 2023 season. He recently updated his health status heading into the 2024 season.
Watson suffered a glenoid fracture in his throwing shoulder, ending the season altogether. He had surgery and remains in the rehab process, where he recently said he’s making good progress.
“The situation is good,” Watson said on his QB Unplugged podcast. “We’re in a great spot, right where we need to be. We have plenty of time to ramp up the throwing sessions and things like that, but everything is going pretty smooth.
“As long as I’m feeling well and the doctors and (physical therapists) and everyone are on the same page, we’re in a good spot.”
Cleveland Browns Quarterback Status
Deshaun Watson appeared in six games during the 2023 season. He was in and out of the lineup before he finally went on injured reserve.
Five quarterbacks started games for the Browns before head coach Kevin Stefanski found Joe Flacco. Flacco took the Browns to a 4-1 record and a wildcard playoff spot, where they eventually lost to the Houston Texans.
Flacco will not return for the Browns. He did not resign; instead, he will be in the quarterback room for the Indianapolis Colts.
The Browns brought in the always-entertaining Jameis Winston on a one-year deal worth up to $8.7 million.
Winston has stated that he wants to be a starting quarterback in the NFL, but barring a setback in recovery, Watson is the presumed starter.
The progress of Deshaun Watson is worth monitoring for the Browns. He has three years left of his fully guaranteed deal. Some might want Watson out of Cleveland if this season doesn’t go smoothly.
