After a run in 2022 that saw the Cincinnati Bengals finish on top of the AFC North division, the team went on to have a disappointing performance last season. In the coming season, though, they might have to retool their roster via the NFL draft, whether they like it or not.
The Bengals’ frustrating run last season can be attributed to quarterback Joe Burrow’s wrist injury in Week 11. This led the team to lose their franchise player for the rest of their campaign.
From there, Jake Browning took over the quarterback role and even exceeded expectations. The thing is, it still wasn’t enough for the Bengals to actually complete, leading the team to finish last in the AFC North division with a 9-8 record.
Cincinnati Bengals’ Top Wide Receiver Choices in the NFL Draft
During the offseason, the Bengals are faced with the choice of paying Tee Higgins a bigger bag. With their lineup of wide receivers already complete, especially with Ja’Marr Chase leading the pack, the front office may have to be creative in dealing with Higgins and his new contract.
Rather than pay Higgins, the Bengals have several options to consider. Aaron Schatz of ESPN explains more:
“There are two options here that involve drafting a wide receiver high in the first round. First, the Bengals could place the franchise tag on Higgins, letting their new receiver learn from the veterans for a year before Higgins leaves in 2025 and the new receiver takes his place. Or, given how successful most first-round receivers have been as rookies, the Bengals could allow Higgins to leave this offseason and replace him with the youngster. Receivers available when the Bengals pick at No. 18 should include LSU’s Brian Thomas Jr., Oregon’s Troy Franklin and Michigan’s Roman Wilson,” Schatz wrote.
Whether the Bengals choose to keep Higgins for the time being or let him go outright will be known in the coming months. What’s certain, though, is that when Burrow comes back next season, Cincinnati will be one team to look out for, especially if they have a new wide receiver to play with the star quarterback.
