The Cincinnati Bengals had one of the worst defenses last season as they allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete passes whenever they liked. They are on the lookout for talented players in the secondary to make life easier for everyone.
They might have found the player they’re looking for as one of their AFC rivals recently released a talented player in Justin Simmons. He’s among the best players who were surprisingly cut from their respective teams for salary cap reasons.
With the way Simmons performed last season, it won’t be surprising if the Bengals get aggressive in their chase to bag the free safety as a member of their secondary.
Cincinnati Bengals among favorites to land Justin Simmons in free agency
Cincy Jungle’s Aaron Gershon wrote about the possible acquisition of Simmons for the Bengals as they need help with their secondary.
He wrote that he could be the perfect fit for their situation as he’s set to become a more affordable option compared to the rest of the safety market in the 2024 free agency:
At 30 years old, Simmons would likely be a more affordable option than other free agent safeties, such as 24-year-old Xavier McKinney of the New York Giants or 26-year-old Darnell Savage of the Green Bay Packers.
He would also be the perfect mentor for former first-round selection Dax Hill, who will be entering his third season in 2024, as well as Jordan Battle, who will enter his second pro season.
If you look at Simmons’ numbers during his final year with the Denver Broncos, It’s easy to understand why the Cincinnati Bengals would want him. He only had three interceptions, eight pass deflections, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one sack, and 17 solo tackles.
While these numbers are lower compared to his 2022 performance, it’s hard to deny that he’s still a capable corner who can provide the extra push for a contender to become Super Bowl champions.
It’s now up to the Bengals to push for a good contract that would want him to play for them.
