It is no secret; the Cincinnati Bengals have dramatically mishandled several of their superstars over the course of this offseason. One obvious example of that would be defensive end Trey Hendrickson when he requested a trade two years ahead of his contract’s expiration. Most of the time when a player demands a trade like that, it’s because they are seeking an extension in the last year of their contract, but Hendrickson’s move indicates a feeling of unrest that seems to permeate throughout the team.
Cincinnati Bengals Playmaker Upset with Team Over Contract Negotiations

On top of Hendrickson, things certainly haven’t gone according to plan on the offensive side of the ball. The obvious example of that is talented wide receiver Tee Higgins who has repeatedly asked for a trade after the organization has reportedly put in zero effort into providing him with a contract extension. The dramatics behind this contentious dispute have been extensive after Higgins took to social media on multiple occasions and then his agent went to the media with exact details of the negotiations.

That drama continued this week when NFL Insider Adam Schefter spoke with Dan Orlovsky on Wednesday’s edition of NFL Live. Orlovsky asserted that Higgins wouldn’t be able to generate a legitimate contract from a competitor if he didn’t play well this season when Schefter succumbed to an emotional outburst.

Schefter has a solid point that when you treat your players in such a haphazard manner, you certainly aren’t going to get their best effort. The argument doesn’t seem too farfetched that if Higgins were to make it halfway through the season and Cincinnati isn’t a clear Super Bowl contender that Higgins might start playing a little bit more gingerly.

After all, one of the biggest complaints about Higgins over the past few seasons is that the talented Clemson target man has struggled to stay healthy for his offense. Last season, Higgins missed five games and certainly wasn’t at 100% during the twelve games that he managed to play in as he finished the season with less than 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since his rookie season.

Regardless of how this contract situation plays out with Higgins, it is obvious that one of Cincinnati’s star players is certainly not happy with his treatment.
