Defensive tackle Chris Jones has been a force throughout his career and could potentially break the bank as a free agent. The Kansas City Chiefs could potentially franchise tag him but remember that he missed Week 1 last season due to holding out of a contract. As he’s going to be 30 years old by Week 1 this season, there is the potential he could be wearing some new laundry.
But what teams are the best fit for the three-time Super Bowl champion, two-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler?
Chris Jones Landing Spot #1: Kansas City Chiefs
We do not need to get too fancy here as the Kansas City Chiefs are the best option for Jones. He has played his entire career with the team and coming off back-to-back Super Bowl titles, they need to continue to solidify their defense. He has proven to be a force in the playoffs and continues to get pressure.
We do not know what the Chiefs defense looks like without him but it certainly will not be the best it could be. With the Chiefs having the option to franchise tag him or come to a long-term agreement, there’s still the possibility he signs a team-friendly deal.
Chris Jones Landing Spot #2: Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears are synonymous with one thing: defense. With the first overall pick and more than $78 million in cap space according to Over The Cap, they can continue to bolster the roster. The team was able to sign Montez Sweat to a deal after trading for him and would be able to add another significant piece to the defensive line.
After releasing safety Eddie Jackson and offensive guard Cody Whitehair earlier this offseason, they have to make a move in the right direction and help the defense get going. Adding Jones to the defense will be a huge plus for the team that can offer him a massive contract.
Chris Jones Landing Spot #3: Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals are in a spot where they need to gain relevancy and adding Chris Jones does that. Jonathan Gannon has been with the Minnesota Vikings and the Philadelphia Eagles before becoming the coach for the Cardinals last season. One thing those teams had in common was having a deep defensive line.
Jones would immediately add legitimacy to the defense and could continue to help improve in the NFC West against teams like the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers. The defensive line is critical against strong quarterbacks so expect them to make a play and be one of the better fits.
