The Kansas City Chiefs look like they easily should go for the three-peat and win their third straight Super Bowl, as almost no teams look like they can compete with them, especially in the AFC. The Chiefs are nowhere near their most dominant selves, and they are 7-0 and are going to lock up the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
With this team in the middle of a dominant dynasty, there has been speculation that their all-time head coach Andy Reid may be thinking about retirement in the near future. The team’s owner Clark Hunt has now responded to the rumors.
Andy Reid Is Here To Stay, But Need a Plan For Succession
In the last 6 seasons, the team has been one of the most dominant dynasties the NFL has ever seen, and it would make sense that their legendary coach Reid would want to ride this dynasty out for as long as he can. At 66 years old, Reid is getting up there in age but still has a lot left in his tank according to the owner, and with their all-time quarterback Patrick Mahomes, it would make sense that Reid would want to stay as long as possible.
There has been speculation last and this year, that Reid is going to call it a career soon, and the team’s owner addressed that and more. Hunt expects Reid to keep coaching for many more years although he also mentioned that the organization will need to be thinking about the succession plan as well:
“He certainly seems rejuvenated, I would say, by the success of the team in the last few years and having one of the most special quarterbacks of all time,” Hunt told ESPN. “I have no sense that he has any interest in retiring any time soon, which is fantastic.
“But I think any leader needs to be thinking about succession. … Eventually that day will come.”
Reid is one of the best to ever do it, and he has been doing it for quite a long time. Having Mahomes and this team is convincing enough not to walk away just yet, and with the ability to win the Super Bowl every year, it is surely extremely difficult to walk away from such a situation.
It appears that he is not going anywhere for at least the next few seasons, and that means the dynasty will continue. It will be incredibly interesting to see Mahomes and this team without their all-time coach, but for now, that is not something the Chiefs have to worry about. The rest of the NFL however, has to be worrying about them for years to come.
