The Chicago Bears have garnered a lot of offseason hype. While the Bears finished with the worst record in 2022, Justin Fields gave fans a lot to cheer about. There were glimmers of hope throughout the team, especially in the running game. The Bears are hoping to continue their dominance on the ground. According to one report, there could be real competition for the starting running back position.
Chicago Bears Running Back Position
David Montgomery left in free agency for the division-rival Lions. This leaves Khalil Herbert plus free agent addition D’Onta Foreman and fourth-round pick Roschon Johnson. While many thought that Herbert would be the de facto starter, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune is not so sure. He reported that there is “real competition” for the starting job. Herbert had a nice season but has never been the featured back. If someone impressed in training camp, they could easily nab the starting position.
Expectations For 2023
The good news about having the worst record in the league is it is hard to get worse than that. There is one thing and one thing only that Bears fans are looking for this year. Does Justin Fields make another leap? While he was electric on the ground, his passing numbers left a lot to be desired. If he proves he can be an elite passer, Bears fans will not care about the record. I personally would expect improvement but I doubt they will be a playoff team this year unless a lot goes right.
For the Chicago Bears, the running back room is not the only place where there is competition. Training camp will be interesting to watch and see who comes out on top in all of the competitions.
