After a promising 4-2 start to the season with a generational rookie talent at the helm, the Chicago Bears have collapsed, forcing the organization to do things they’ve never done.
Midway through the season, the Bears fired head coach Matt Eberflus, something which the organization had never done. Weeks later, sentiment among Bears fans has not changed. They are still waiting to see evidence that they will be breaking out of the cycle that has plagued them for the last decade.
Thursday Night Football’s 6-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks did not inspire much confidence within the Bears’ fanbase. The Bears last won on Oct. 13, and they will not have a chance to win again until 2025 when they take on the Green Bay Packers.
Chicago Bears fans started a “sell the team” chant
Virginia Halas McCaskey, the daughter of team founder George Halas, and the McCaskey family are the owners and string pullers for the Chicago Bears. McCaskey is a 101-year-old owner, but her son George Halas McCaskey is the chairman and reportedly has more to do with how the organization operates.
The McCaskey family is notably private and wanted nothing to do with being on the HBO preseason show “Hard Knocks” this season. So much so, that they even prohibited cursing on the show, as described by the director of “Hard Knocks” Shannon Furman in a Pro Football Talk article.
“I’ll be honest, this team curses much less than any other team I’ve been around, but it is out of respect for the McCaskey family,” Furman said. “It’s something that they don’t do and wouldn’t want to see it, so it’s kind of been a decision that was made out of respect for them letting us in their house and wanting to be respectful to them.”
Regardless of the inner workings of the McCaskey family, Bears fans are very upset with the cycle in which they’ve found themselves. The Bears draft a quarterback with a lame-duck head coach, the QB struggles and then has to adjust to a new head coach in their young career, thus dooming them never to reach their full potential.
From Mitch Trubisky to Justin Fields and now Caleb Williams, the Bears seem to be making the same mistake again. A crucial year of Williams’ development was essentially thrown down the drain as it was wasted installing an offense and organizational system that will completely change next year.
This came to a head in one of the least-entertaining football games of the season, a 6-3 slugfest loss to the Seahawks. Fans became so upset that chants to sell the team broke out for all to hear.

The McCaskey family, who was likely able to hear the chants, has to face the antithesis of what they’ve done the last decade in the Green Bay Packers. The Packers have had two coaches since 2006 when Mike McCarthy was hired.
Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love sat in waiting for longer than most Bears QBs stay on the team, and neither of them had to deal with the turnover with which Bears QBs have had to deal. Love had years to learn a single system instead of trying to make a lame-duck coach’s system work, likely by instilling bad habits, before starting all over again.
While Bears fans will likely not get their wish anytime soon, it has happened in the NFL. The Washington Commanders recently boasted one of the worst owners in the NFL before he was forced to sell due to legal issues. In a short time, the Commanders have found themselves a franchise quarterback and are firmly planted in the playoff race.
