After sinking down the standings last season, the Chicago Bears must find a way to get out of the rut they’re in when the NFL returns later this year. Among the options that must be carefully considered is signing Michael Pittman Jr.
For the third consecutive year, the Bears didn’t make the playoffs. But before that, the team achieved history in the wrong way by enduring the franchise’s longest losing streak last season.
On the bright side, the Bears ended up with the number one pick in the 2024 draft to improve their roster. With many projecting Caleb Williams to go first, there’s a pretty good chance Chicago is going to get its star quarterback soon.
Aside from quarterback, the Bears would also do well to surround that position with capable guys in the offensive lineup. Fortunately, there are several names the front office can consider in free agency.
The Main Reason Why Michael Pittman Jr. Should Be Signed By The Chicago Bears In Free Agency
Among those names is the Indianapolis Colts’ Michael Pittman Jr. Aaron Schatz explained more in his article for ESPN, including one glaring problem for the Bears should they decide to pursue him in free agency:
“There’s a chance the Colts franchise-tag Pittman. But if he makes it to free agency, especially with Darnell Mooney hitting the market, Pittman would be a huge addition for the Bears. Pittman caught 109 passes last season for 1,152 yards with a 70% catch rate.
His lower average depth of target (7.5 yards) makes him a strong complement to Moore (10 yards). And Pittman does a great job of getting open and attracting targets; Pittman was targeted on 28.9% of routes last year, ranking in the top 10, compared to 25.2% for Moore,” Schatz wrote.
As it stands, the ball is in Indianapolis’ hands when it comes to Pittman. The best case scenario here is if he doesn’t and signs up with the Bears instead.
If he does and Williams turns out to be the star everyone is expecting him to be, Chicago has a chance to finish well last season, unlike their previous campaigns in the NFL.
