The Chicago Bears have a busy offseason ahead of them as they try to improve their playoff chances in 2024. Part of the process was letting go of one of the longest-tenured players on the roster.

Cody Whitehar, a former lock in the Chicago Bears offensive line, was recently released after eight successful years with the team. Now a free agent, the 31-year-old made his first public statement that addresses his release.

“I would like to sincerely say thanks to the Chicago Bears for giving me the opportunity to play for such a historic franchise,” he began in his statement. He also thanked his teammates for the bonds they forged and his coaches for helping him improve his craft.

He also gave a special shoutout to the fans. “It has been a great ride and thank you for all your support!” he said.

Whitehair was a reliable player for the Bears during his time with the organization. He never missed a game during his first four years in the NFL, becoming a reliable presence in the trenches. It was during this stretch that he won his first and only Pro Bowl nod.

The latter four years were a mixed bag. He got enough game time during 2020 and 2021, but he was sidelined for much of 2022. His snaps saw a sharp decline in 2023 as his poor form saw him only saw him play 69% of eligible snaps.

Fortunately for Whitehair, there are plenty of teams that could use his services. Teams like the New York Giants, Washington Commanders, Tennessee Titans, and New York Jets struggled to keep their QBs protected. Any of them would love to have a capable O-Line presence as a plug-and-play option.

Meanwhile, the Bears will have to fill the gap in the locker room Whitehair leaves. Fans can only hope that the players step up to take his spot and help the team win more games in 2024.
