Chase Claypool was once a dynamic NFL wide receiver, but his 2024 season may be in Canada.

Chase Claypool’s rookie season for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020 saw him score 11 touchdowns. Four years later, he may be playing in the Canadian league.

Entering the game’s final play with 41 receiving yards, Chase Claypool looked like he would go over his pregame mark of 36.5. Claypool proceeded to do the one thing he couldn’t do: move the ball backward.

The Former Pittsburgh Steeler, Chicago Bear, and Miami Dolphin might be heading to the Candian Football League (CFL) if the NFL isn’t an option for him. Via 3downnation.com, the Roughriders have added Claypool to the team’s exclusive negotiating list.

It doesn’t mean Claypool is headed for Canada. But if he ever goes there, the Roughriders have the first call on signing him.

The Rise and Fall of Chase Claypool

A highly touted prospect out of Notre Dame, Claypool was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 2020 draft. Claypool burst onto the scene with 889 yards and 11 touchdowns. His second season was not as productive in finding the endzone, but he still had 976 total yards.

Halfway through his third season, he was traded to the Chicago Bears for a second-round pick. Rumors of his effort, inability to learn the playbook, and locker-room attitude spread throughout Chicago media.

In his fourth season, Claypool only played three games before being released by the Bears. He ended last season with the Miami Dolphins. He appeared in nine games but only registered four catches for them.

Claypool is currently a free agent.

His hometown is Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. He was eligible for the 2020 CFL Draft but went undrafted even though he was the number two overall prospect within the league. His Canadian upbringing explains why the Roughriders have decided to add him to the exclusive negotiating list.

According to SI.com, CFL teams can add anyone to their exclusive negotiation list, but they are unlikely to waste a spot on that list for a player who is not coming to the league. Those spots count as roster spots, meaning it would not make sense for a team to add Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers.
