Carson Wentz led the Eagles down the path to a Super Bowl appearance in 2017, only to see Nick Foles hoist the Lombardi Trophy in February 2018. Fast Forward six years, and it was Foles who helped convince Wentz to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I remember all the good things [Foles] had to say about his time here,” Wentz told reporters at his Chiefs introductory press conference Thursday. “He absolutely loved it. He loved working with those guys, and those things he said to me back then definitely still rang true in my head as I was making this decision.”
Why Carson Wentz Signed with Kansas City Chiefs
With the Kansas City Chiefs, Carson Wentz will be Patrick Mahomes’ top backup quarterback, for an organization that is seeking to become the first franchise in the NFL to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
“Why I’m here today is just the winning culture and seeing it from afar, seeing it around the league for the last couple of years [and admiring] it for years,” Wentz said.
“That was a big piece of the puzzle for me. The desire to be here on a winning team, in a good culture, in a good community with a good fan base seemed like a good fit.”
Wentz hasn’t been able to replicate the success of the fast start to his second NFL season, after disappointing stints as a starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders, before spending time late last season with the Los Angeles Rams.
A career 62.7 percent passer with 22,292 yards and 153 touchdowns to 67 interceptions on his resumé, the Kansas City Chiefs are banking on Wentz providing some stability should Mahomes be forced to miss any significant time in 2024.
