Early Win has Jayhawks Feeling Confident

It’s an early start to Big XII play for the West Virginia Mountaineers as they welcome the Kansas Jayhawks for a 6 p.m. contest in Morgantown. Emotions could play a big part in this game. The Mountaineers are coming off of a gut wrenching loss to arch rival Pittsburgh last week. On the contrary, Kansas was able to blow out the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles with a score of 56-10. You may be saying “it’s Tennessee Tech,” and while that is true, blowouts against lower level competition have been rare for Kansas in recent years.

After a game which saw the Jayhawks amass 297 yards rushing, averaging 9.9 yards per carry, Kansas is coming in confident. Devin Neal lead the way with 108 yards and two touchdowns on just four carries. He was followed by Sevion Morrison who rushed eight time for 70 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Jalon Daniels was sure not to let the running backs have all the fun, though. Daniels added 29 more rushing yards on three carries. He was also accurate in the passing game completing 15/18 for 189 yards.

Although a tough loss, there were some bright spots to West Virginia’s performance last week against Pittsburgh. The Mountaineers defense held Pitt to just 76 yards rushing. Newcomer, Lee Kpogba lead the way with 10 tackles during the game. Senior defensive lineman Dante Stills was a force with 2 tackles for loss. It will be up to him and Kpogba to slow down the Kansas offense.

As the stats read, it will be a strength-on-strength matchup for Saturday’s contest.   Kansas will have their work cut out for them as they face a Mountaineer team eager for their first win of the season. Expect an excited crowd for WVU’s home opener as the Mountaineers and Jayhawks fight to see who will start 1-0 in conference play.
