The 3rd day of free agency has come and gone and Dallas has not made much noise. With not a lot of cap room available, we were waiting to see what kind of moves Jerry would be able to make to bolster both sides of the ball. There are still some key positions that still need to be addressed. None more important than in the offensive backfield.
With the exit of Tony Pollard to Tennessee and Saquon Barkley headed to their division rival (Philadelphia), Dallas has not made much push to add a top notch guy to the roster to run the ball. It seemed as if Derrick Henry was a lock to go to Dallas, but ultimately opted to join forces with Lamar Jackson in Baltimore to make an already dangerous offense that much more powerful.
Dallas also watched other potential players sign with other teams in the division. On top of the Eagles bringing in Barkley, the Giants signed Devin Singletary and Washington added Austin Ekeler. All top guys that will make a significant impact in 2024.
One by one, running backs have been flying off of the board. There are still 2 backs available that could make sense for Dallas.
A.J. Dillon has been in the background in Green Bay since joining the league back in 2020. It feels as if Dillon has been in the league for 10+ years but he is only 25 years old and never had a chance to be “the guy” with the Packers. Dillon is a powerful downhill runner that has the capability of being a lead back in the right system.
Another option to help Dak (Prescott) is the former Ohio State Buckeye standout, J.K. Dobbins. Coming out of college, Dobbins had the hype to be the next big thing when drafted in the 2nd round by Baltimore back in 2020. But after a solid rookie season where he rushed for over 800 yards and had 9 touchdowns, Dobbins has been plagued with injuries. He missed the entire 2021 season with a knee injury and has only played in 9 total games the past 3 seasons.
So who is the better fit in Texas?
Either could play a key role in the Cowboys high powered offense. Both have been recently linked to Dallas. If J.K. can get healthy, I think he is the better choice to be the RB1. Dez Bryant recently threw in his two cents stating that this is the “right opportunity” for Dobbins. If the organization doesn’t want to take the risk, I would feel comfortable moving forward with A.J. Dillon and giving him the chance to lead a depleted Cowboys backfield.
