Buffalo Bills, Von Miller Agree to Major Pay Cut as Team Chases Super Bowl 59 Glory

The Buffalo Bills know that their championship window with their current core of players are quickly closing as Von Miller is beginning to get up there in age.

The future first-ballot Hall of Famer is already 34 years old, and only time can tell whether he can still play at a high level within the next couple of years.

As the Bills continue trying to find ways to break through the Kansas City Chiefs, they know that they have to make major changes to their roster to further extend their Super Bowl window.

The team managed to get a chance to better their team as they agreed to a new contract with their star edge rusher.

Buffalo Bills and Von Miller agree to a pay cut that will bring in more talent Super Bowl contender

Miller was about to eat a huge chunk of the Bills’ salary cap, but his production last season didn’t match the expected salary in any shape or form.

Broncos Wire’s Jon Heath wrote about the details surrounding the new contract Miller will be playing with for 2024:

Miller was set to earn $17.145 million in 2024. After agreeing to restructure his contract, he’ll now earn $8.855 million, ESPN’s Field Yates first reported.

Miller’s base salary dropped all the way down to $1.5 million, but he was given a $7 million signing bonus, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. That lowered his total salary cap hit from about $23.78 million down to $15.13 million in 2024.

The pay cut gives the Bills more cap space and Miller will have the chance to earn up to $20 million if he maxes out incentives, according to Yates.

The new contract is a very team-friendly deal that will allow the Buffalo Bills to focus the $16 million that would have otherwise gone to Miller. It also allows Miller to show the team and the rest of the league that he’s still one of the most outstanding pass rushers in the NFL.

Is it time for Von Miller to retire?

While the restructuring of Von Miller’s 2024 contract is mostly connected to the team’s dire salary cap situation, his lack of productivity from the pass rush is also another reason for the restructuring.

He wasn’t a starter in the 12 games he played in 2023., and his numbers show how much he has fallen from the rotation. He only had two solo tackles and one assisted tackle to his name. He wasn’t even able to get a sack.

It’s a very harsh decline from his 2022 numbers, where he made 18 solo tackles, two pass deflections, one forced fumble, and eight sacks.

Maybe the reason why Miller agreed to reduced terms on his contract is that he’s preparing to walk away from the game. As the Bills’ championship window is quickly closing, it may be time for Miller to consider his life after football.

His incredible streak of performances during his peak with the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Rams will easily get him into Canton. If this season is his last dance, fans can expect to see him leave it all on the field.
