The Buffalo Bills had brought in an Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler as a defensive lineman for the team. While it would have been such an amazing story for the gold medalist to have made the NFL roster sadly that will have to wait some time as the Olympian Gable Stevenson has a lot of work to do if he wants to play in the league in the future.
Gold Medal Olympian Cut But Could Still Have A Future In The NFL
The young Gold medal Olympian, 24, had never played football in his life, so it would make sense that after only one training camp he would still need more work to do if he wants to make a team. The Bills saw tremendous size and strength in Stevenson, and clearly a world-class athlete. It was worth the free agent signing even though it did not work out in the end.
While the team released him on Tuesday, there is still a chance that he will make their practice squad and can continue his journey in hopes of making an NFL roster.
“The #Bills are waiving DL Gable Stevenson,” wrote NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo on X/Twitter. “Former wrestler is a developmental prospect so this won’t be the end of the line for him, whether in Buffalo as a member of the practice squad or elsewhere.”
As Garrafolo said, Stevenson was always a developmental project for the team, and they assumed he would not be football-ready after just months of picking it up for the first time. However he noted that the team is thinking about whether or not to keep him on the practice squad in hopes that he can progress.
It is truly crazy to think that Stevenson’s first football game in his life was the preseason opener for the Bills this year. He played in all three preseason games and registered three tackles and two QB hits. He has proven enough for a team to keep him on the practice squad.
He is an all-around incredible athlete as before he attempted to play football, he is a gold medal-winning professional wrestler and was 85-2 in his career. Additionally, he is a two-time national champion, and is one of, if not the best wrestlers in the world.
We will have to wait and see if the Bills will keep him on or if he can find another team ahead of the season.
