The Buffalo Bills have been knocking on the doorstep of the Super Bowl for the better part of the past half-decade, and Josh Allen has consistently been in the MVP conversation, despite Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs having both of their numbers during the postseason.
However, this offseason witnessed a mass churn at wide receiver around Allen, after Buffalo dealt Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in a blockbuster trade, while wide receiver Gabriel Davis and Devin Singletary, two consistent contributors on offense, will be in Jacksonville and New York, respectively.
At least one NFL executive believes the Bills’ losses are going to catch up to them this season.
“The Bills won’t make the playoffs,” a rival AFC Scouting Director told me, when I sought his boldest but reasonable prediction for this upcoming season. “Talent deficient, which makes Josh Allen have to do even more.”
There has been doubt about the Bills in the public in recent seasons, but perhaps hoping that upstart second-round pick Keon Coleman, veteran receiver Mack Hollins, and new arrival Curtis Samuel make up for the production lost by Diggs could present too many moving parts for Allen and the Bills to return to the postseason. Not to mention in an AFC East that’s more competitive than ever.
Buffalo Bills’ Biggest Threats in the AFC East
Despite the myriad changes on offense, the Bills remain among the favorites to win the AFC East division, and for good reason.
If Buffalo is able to quickly adapt offensively and wind up repeating, once again, as division champs, this will wind up being a very battle-test team when the postseason begins. That is, if they make the tournament.
Here’s a look at Buffalo’s biggest threats in the division:
New York Jets – Aaron Rodgers returns with a supporting cast that includes veteran wide receiver Mike Williams and emerging star Garrett Wilson at wide receiver and explosive running back Breece Hall in the backfield. The Jets look to ride one of the NFL’s stingiest defenses, led by arguably the premier cornerback duo on the league, and an offense finally capable of being productive, back to the postseason.
Miami Dolphins – The most prolific offense with speed in spades at the skill positions. There may not be a more explosive wide receiver duo than Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, while the Dolphins sunk significant resources into bolstering the pass rush this offseason one year removed from a run to the AFC Wild Card.
