The Fit for the Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills are looking to bolster their defensive line, and Sebastian Joseph-Day might be a key addition. The team recently lost plenty on defense, with Leonard Floyd, Tim Settle Jr., and Poona Ford heading elsewhere in free agency and Jordan Phillips, Linval Joseph, and Shaq Lawson currently unsigned.
Given the Bills’ specific needs in this area, Joseph-Day’s experience and track record could provide the necessary boost to a defense that sorely needs some depth. This visit indicates at least a little bit of mutual interest, especially if it was in person.
Sebastian Joseph-Day by the Numbers
Joseph-Day, standing 6’4” and weighing 310 pounds, entered the NFL scene through the 2019 draft, selected in the sixth round by the Los Angeles Rams.
Over his three-season tenure with the Rams, Joseph-Day established himself as a reliable starter in 38 games, amassing 137 combined tackles and six sacks. His trajectory, however, encountered a setback in 2021 when a torn pectoral muscle led to his placement on Injured Reserve, limiting his season to just seven games.
The following year, Joseph-Day headed to the Los Angeles Chargers on a significant three-year, $24 million contract, affirming his value in the NFL market. In 2022, he started all 16 games, contributing two sacks, a safety, an interception, and a fumble recovery, alongside 56 combined tackles.
His performance in 2023 remained solid with the Chargers, where he notched 32 tackles and three sacks before being waived in late December.
Joseph-Day signed on with the San Francisco 49ers and during his brief stint there, he played in two games and added five tackles to the season while helping the 49ers get to the Super Bowl.
Before his NFL journey, Joseph-Day made a name for himself at Rutgers, where he developed the skills that would eventually define his professional career. His journey from a sixth-round draft pick to a key defensive player exemplifies his growth within the game.
The Buffalo Bills may soon find it worth signing the 28-year-old Sebastian Joseph-Day, given his play throughout his career and the experience. As of now, the Buffalo Bills only have five defensive linemen on the roster, and Joseph-Day could help plug one of the holes left by players exiting.
