Browns Suddenly Favorites To Land 31-Game-Starting QB To Replace Deshaun Watson

The Cleveland Browns may be chalking their trade for Deshaun Watson up as a loss.  Their return on the trade has been disastrous, to say the least.  Getting a new quarterback under center and creating a new face of the franchise may be exactly what this organization needs (again).

That could happen in the very near future according to one report.

Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department highlighted a few moves that need to happen for each team.  Cam Ward joining the Browns was on the list:

2025 NFL Draft: QB Cam Ward, Miami

There are very few good ways forward for the Browns when it comes to Deshaun Watson’s contract. The quarterback hasn’t been good, and it’s becoming clear that he is not going to turn things around in Cleveland. However, his contract makes it nearly impossible to move on from him.

One thing the Browns could do is to make Watson the most expensive backup quarterback in NFL history or release him with a post-June 1 designation next season. Either way, the Browns would need a starting quarterback on a rookie contract. Taking one of the top signal-callers in the draft would allow them to make that kind of decision and there’s a lot to like about Cam Ward.

“Cam Ward is among the most gifted throwers in the NFL draft class. The combination of arm talent, mobility/athleticism, and accuracy is growing among NFL scouts,” Dame Parson noted in his scouting report of Ward.

(Previous Week’s Selections: OL Brady Christensen(trade), IOL Teven Jenkins, LB Lander Barton)

According to head coach Kevin Stefanski, Watson still remains the starter despite posting the lowest quarterback rating among qualified passers, 21.5.

He reiterated on Monday that it was his own decision to keep starting Watson:

When asked if co-owner Jimmy Haslam is “forcing” him to stick with Watson, Stefanski said, “I don’t get caught up in narratives, but we have a good dialogue with myself, [general manager] Andrew [Berry], ownership about all things that have to do with this team.

They’ve been nothing but supportive, and any decision when it comes to football is my decision.”

It look like Cleveland will ride Deshaun Watson until the wheels fall off.  Will that be after the 2024 season?
