It has certainly been a rocky 2023 season for the New York Giants. Now, they just got more unsettling news.
According to Jordan Raanan, TE Darren Waller said it is likely going to take weeks before he recovers from his hamstring injury.
Darren Waller
Waller was expected to be one of the biggest offensive weapons for the New York Giants this season.
Two weeks ago against the Washington Commanders, it looked like it was finally heading in that direction. Waller had seven catches for 98 yards in that game. He also had his first touchdown reception in a 14-7 win.
Through this 2023 season, Waller has 36 catches, 384 receiving yards, and just one touchdown reception. Statistically, it has arguably been Waller’s worst season in the last five years.
Unfortunately, Waller suffered a hamstring injury early into a 13-10 overtime loss against the New York Jets.
New York Giants Season
It has been a disappointing season for the New York Giants thus far. They are sitting with a 2-6 record and have clearly regressed from their 2022 season.
Their offense is last in the NFL, with just 11.9 points per game.
To be fair, the Giants have been dealing with several key injuries. One of the biggest has to be left tackle Andrew Thomas. He has been out since Week 1 due to a hamstring injury of his own.
New York also has other key injuries, including QB Daniel Jones and rookie C John Michael Schmitz. Plus, star RB Saquon Barkley missed three games earlier this season due to an ankle injury.
The point is that the Giants have certainly faced a lot of adversity. Last week, it got so bad that they had to play practice squad QB Tommy DeVito for most of the game against the Jets.
Waller’s injury only adds to the frustration and turmoil that the Giants have experienced throughout this season. This is especially true when Daniel Jones is slated to return next week against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Looking Ahead
The New York Giants have an uphill battle to make the playoffs. However, they do face the Las Vegas Raiders on the road next week. At the time of writing, they are just 1.5-point road underdogs.
New York’s schedule is not too bad after that. They admittedly have a tough road game against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10. However, they have two very winnable games after that against the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots.
We must wait and see if Waller can return for any of these games. If he goes the route of Andrew Thomas, do not count on it.
