Ngoyi had his list of potential landing spots shortened to ISU, his hometown team Nebraska, and Washington headed into Wednesday. His family, Links teammates and coaches assembled at Lincoln High School where he took the microphone and made his decision public.
“I want to start off by thanking my teammates. They crafted me into the person I am today,” Ngoyi said. “If you would have seen me my freshman year you wouldn’t think I would be in the situation I am in today.”
He also spoke about the importance of his parents and six brothers in his journey to a Division I program.
“Big shout out to my parents,” he said. “They both moved here from Congo and left their family so me and my brothers could have a better life.”
ISU Recruiting Success
Ngoyi will try to improve upon his junior year this fall. He had 467 receiving yards and six touchdowns last season. At 6’4 and an estimated 180 pounds, he is also an exceptional track athlete. He is but the latest in a string of strong skill position recruits to join the ISU football program under coach Matt Campbell. Last year he landed three-star receiver Jason Essex who had competing offers from Baylor, Oklahoma State, Arkansas and in-state rival Iowa. Campbell followed that up with four-star receiver Greg Gaines, who had offers from Penn State, Georgia, Auburn and Florida State among others.
The skill positions had a strong showing in 2021, especially in the passing game. Xavier Hutchinson led the team with 83 catches for 987 yards and five touchdowns. Charlie Kolar had 6 touchdowns on 62 catches and 756 yards. The season prior it was Hutchinson and Kolar again. This time Hutchinson posted 771 receiving yards and Kolar had 591 and seven TDs. Hutchinson is about to embark on his last year of eligibility while Kolar just signed a four-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens. That clears the way for some new names to shine in 2023.
