Florida State has been approved to begin the long process of potentially leaving the ACC.
On Friday morning, Florida State’s Board of Trustees met to discuss the school’s decision to take legal action against the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The school’s board unanimous approved the proposal, meaning the school can begin the process of taking legal action against their conference, which likely will begin the process of the Seminoles leaving their longtime home.
However, Florida State cannot leave the ACC until June 2025 at the earliest, providing the school notifies the conference of their departure before August 2024.
As long as Florida State notifies ACC it is leaving league before this August – it has not done this yet – the earliest Seminoles could leave ACC would be June 30, 2025 & join a new league on July 1, 2025

The waters get a little muddied with a potential Florida State-ACC split as with the conference’s additions for the 2024 (and beyond) season, which include Stanford, California, and SMU joining the power five conference, it was required that the ACC remains with at least 15 schools. As of this writing, the ACC will field 17 teams for the 2024 season, however, if two or more schools notify their intent to leave before Florida State does so, it’s unknown if the Seminoles will be able to depart the ACC if the conference doesn’t add any new members beforehand.
Action Network’s Brett McMurphy spoke with Florida State’s attorney David Ashburn, who confirmed the ACC’s 15-team minimum, earlier this year:
