The San Francisco 49ers signed one of their quarterbacks to an extension just as the free agent negotiating period started on Monday. The 49ers have Brock Purdy locked down through the 2025 season in a rookie contract, but the team’s backups were set to head into free agency this week.
Sam Darnold is expected to leave this offseason
Former New York Jets first-round pick Sam Darnold was QB 2 for the 49ers last season. He’s expected to receive another shot at starting for an NFL team for the 2024 season. The Minnesota Vikings are linked as a possible fit for Darnold.
The San Francisco 49ers extended a QB
With Darnold expected to leave San Francisco, the 49ers made sure to keep a familiar hand with the team for the upcoming season. Per Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, the 49ers signed Brandon Allen to a one-year deal.
The #49ers are re-signing QB Brandon Allen, source said. An excellent presence in their QB room.

Brandon Allen did not play any games last season for the 49ers
The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Allen in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He joined the 49ers last offseason. Allen was Joe Burrow’s backup in Cincinnati for three seasons before signing with the 49ers. Allen did not play for the 49ers last season, so it’s kind of a surprise the team made it a priority to extend him at the start of the free-agency negotiation period.
Allen has thrown for 1,611 yards, ten touchdowns, and six interceptions in his career.
