New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is reportedly looking for a fresh start after a slow start to the season. The Patriots were blown out by the New Orleans Saints 34-0 as Belichick’s team fell to 1-4 to start the season. The Patriots have now been blown out for a second game in a row, as they lost to the Dallas Cowboys 38-3 in Week 4.
Both Week 4 and Week 5 ended with quarterback Mac Jones on the bench. Belichick didn’t want to lay all of the blame on Jones. The team, as a whole, looks terrible.
It’s not the start Belichick needed after his owner publicly asked fans for forgiveness last season after failing to make the playoffs. Belichick was considered to be on the hot seat this season.
Belichick seemed confident about the Patriots prospects before the season. He claimed the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers would struggle this season because of the way they spent their money for a championship run.
The Buccaneers are 3-1 and lead the NFC South. The Rams are 2-3.
Bill Belichick says the New England Patriots need to start over
Per Micah Baca with the NFL, Belichick said after the loss Sunday the team needed to “start all over” before their Week 6 game against the Las Vegas Raiders:
“Obviously, it was a poor performance today here,” Belichick said after the game on Sunday. “Plain and simple, we’ve got to find a way to play and coach better than that. So let’s go start all over and get back on a better track than we’re on right now. Slow start, and then just couldn’t, could never really get the game under control.”
Belichick will have to hope the Patriots can rebound quickly. They have one winnable game next week against the Raiders before playing the AFC East contenders, the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins, in back-to-back weeks.
If the Patriots continue to lose this season, Belichick could be looking for a fresh start with a new team next season.
