The Pittsburgh Steelers spent the 2024 off-season completely revamping their quarterback room. Spending just $1.1M and a conditional sixth-round pick, the Steelers were able to bring in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. The speculation surrounding Pittsburgh is unclear as some reports say that Russell Wilson will be the day one starter and some say that it is an open competition. We’re starting to see what Sportsbooks think as odds are now being adjusted in relevant fields. Across all major United States Sportsbooks, Justin Fields has more likely odds to win MVP than Russell Wilson.
Quarterback Justin Fields +6500 to Win MVP
Justin Fields is currently +6500 to win MVP which puts him ahead of Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting quarterback Baker Mayfield and right behind Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Deshaun Watson. This also puts Fields way ahead of Russell Wilson in the same category.
When the Pittsburgh Steelers traded Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles, many viewed that move as one that put them all in with Russell Wilson, however shortly after that trade the Steelers were able to lock in a deal with the Chicago Bears sending a conditional sixth-round pick in exchange for Fields. In giving up such little compensation this is a low-risk move for the Steelers.
At this stage in both Wilson’s and Fields’ careers, it is arguable who the better quarterback is, but there’s no doubt Fields has much more upside. Fields has proven to be one of the most dynamic players in the NFL with the ball in his hands. During his time in Chicago the dual threat quarterback posted 2,220 rushing yards, and 14 rushing touchdowns. This would add another dimension to Pittsburghs offense and especially with their rushing game. If Fields can show flashes of that potential in training camp and the preseason, why can’t he be the day-one starter?
Quarterback Russell Wilson +10000 to Win MVP
Russell Wilson is listed as a long shot to win MVP, putting him just in front of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith. With odds of +10000 or greater the books view Wilson to win MVP as a miracle. The MVP award has largely become a quarterback driven award, and nearly every starter, and even incoming rookies have more likely odds than Wilson.
Russell Wilson is coming off of a disastrous experience with the Denver Broncos, where many expected him to be the franchise QB for years to come. Denver failed to make the postseason in both of Wilson’s seasons with them and also went through two different coaching staffs.
It was hoped that uniting Wilson with respected head coach Mike Tomlin would give Wilson a second wind to end his career. It will be interesting to see if Wilson can do so with Justin Fields in the building.
While nothing is for certain in March, the massive difference in odds to win MVP tell us Sportsbooks expect to see more Justin Fields than Russell Wilson in 2024.
