For what seemed like forever, the Miami Dolphins received an entire season of spectacular play from the quarterback position during the 2023 season. Former first-round pick Tua Tagovailoa threw for an NFL-best 4,624 yards while playing every game for the first time in his four-year professional career. Tagovailoa showed shades of former team legend Dan Marino, throwing the football all over the yard for 29 touchdowns against 14 interceptions.
However, despite Tagovailoa’s strong showing, one former NFL quarterback turned media personality believes Miami should use their upcoming first-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft on a gunslinger if a favorable situation presents itself. Tagovailoa has a well-documented injury history, including suffering multiple concussions during the 2022 season.
Kurt Benkert: Calls For Miami Dolphins to Pick a Quarterback if Top Prospects Slide
Kurt Benkert, a former NFL quarterback who spent four seasons in the league, took to his Twitter (also known as X) account on Thursday, suggesting the Miami Dolphins should contemplate picking a quarterback early in the 2024 NFL draft. Benkert has become a fixture on social media over the past year, using his former playing status as a springboard to become a fantasy football personality.
I would not be shocked to see the Dolphins take Penix Jr or Nix if they fall in the draft.
Tua almost retired before last season and is on the final year of his contract.
Seems like a pivotal point for the franchise.

Benkert points to current Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s injury history and contract status as reasons the AFC East club should explore picking a signal-caller. Tagovailoa has a long history of head injuries, and retirement was an actual consideration last offseason. Additionally, Tagovailoa is in the final year of his contract.
Benkert believes Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix could be in play for the Dolphins with the 21st overall pick. Penix Jr. and Nix are both considered top quarterbacks. The former threw 36 touchdowns last season while leading the Washington Huskies to the College Football Playoff Championship. Meanwhile, Nix nearly won the Heisman Trophy after throwing for 4,508 yards and 45 touchdowns against three picks. He completed 77% of his passes.
Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa: Entering Fifth NFL Season
The fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Tua Tagovailoa will enter his fifth NFL season. He played well as a rookie, throwing for 1,814 yards and 11 touchdowns against five interceptions across ten games. After a subpar second season, the Alabama product exploded for 25 touchdowns against eight picks during the 2022 season. However, injuries made him miss five games, including the team’s playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Tagovailoa finally played an entire season in 2023, throwing for 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns, both career highs. However, Miami got beat in the AFC Wild Card game by the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, 26-7.

The ONLY thing Tua has ever shown in common with Marino is wearing the same logo
